Stockton's houses and gardens

What people want from a patio often comes down to the house. Behind the Victorian terraces near the town centre and off Norton Road, back yards are small and walled, so it's usually a neat patio that makes the most of the space, with a path for the bins. The 1930s semis around Hartburn, Fairfield and Norton tend to have long gardens with a tired concrete patio by the back door, ripe for replacing. Billingham and Thornaby have a lot of post-war semis and terraces with a similar story.

The newer estates are different again. Houses in Ingleby Barwick, Wynyard and parts of Eaglescliffe often come with a small builder's patio that owners want to make bigger, and plenty of those gardens slope, so steps and retaining walls come into it. In Yarm and the older parts of Norton, natural stone suits the older houses, and some streets sit in conservation areas.

Wherever you are, the ground matters. A lot of the area is heavy clay that holds water, so a solid base and a proper fall away from the house are what stop a patio sinking and puddling.

Which council?

Most of the area is Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council. Sedgefield and the TS21 villages around it are in County Durham, so Durham County Council. Kirklevington and the villages south of Yarm in TS15 come under North Yorkshire Council, and Wynyard is split between Stockton and Hartlepool. Most patios, paths and low walls don't need planning permission. If yours might, for example a raised patio or a listed building, we'll flag it.
